Turner Claims Fourth BWC Pitching Honor Turner Has 14 Wins on the Season
April 3, 2006 IRVINE, CA – For the fourth time this season, junior Michelle Turner, of the Long Beach State softball team, was selected as the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Turner joined former LBSU pitcher Meredith Cervenka, as the only other 49er to win four Big West Pitcher of the Week honors. Cervenka won four straight Pitcher of the Week honors in 2003.
Turner (Buena Park) picked up wins No. 13 and 14 in the circle as Long Beach State opened its conference schedule with a pair of wins at CS Northridge on Sunday. In game one, Turner allowed just two runs on four hits to go along with six strikeouts in the 3-2 victory. Moreover, the 49ers rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a three-run sixth inning. Turner held strong in the bottom half of the sixth and seventh innings without allowing a hit.
Turner pitched the sixth and seventh innings of game two, and allowed just one hit, while striking out three Matadors to help LBSU preserve its 8-4 victory.
For the season, Turner has compiled a 14-7 record with a league-leading 1.54 ERA, and 105 strikeouts. Her 14 wins are also tops in the Big West.
Long Beach State's third game of the series vs. CS Northridge was postponed today due to continual rainfall in the Northridge area. That game will be made up on Wednesday, Apr. 12 at 1 pm. The 49ers (17-14, 2-0) face Cal Poly for a three-game series at the 49er Softball Complex beginning on Saturday, Apr. 8. |
