NORTHRIDGE, CA The Long Beach State softball team rallied in both games one and two to open Big West Conference play at 2-0 after its 3-2 and 8-4 wins at CS Northridge on Sunday.
Long Beach State has won 11 straight over CSUN since the 2003 season. The double-header was moved to Sunday due to heavy rains and unplayable field conditions at the Matador Diamond on Saturday.
The 49ers, winners of three straight, improved to 17-14, 2-0 Big West, while CS Northridge fell to 11-12, 0-2 Big West.
In the second game, the Matadors built a 2-0 lead thru two innings before Long Beach State responded with a run in the top of the third after a Tiffanie Wedell RBI single scored Melanie McCauley to trim the lead to 2-1.
The 49ers took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning when Kourtnee Gervasi scored on a wild pitch, and Jessica Beaver connected for a single to center field to score Michelle Turner, who doubled after her plate appearance.
The Matadors reclaimed the lead at 4-3 after a two-run home run from Megan Smith, before LBSU rallied yet again for five runs, including a four-run seventh inning, to take the 8-4 lead.
Both Wedell and Turner notched RBI doubles in the seventh inning.
Turner collected her second win of the afternoon (14th of the season), after she relieved Jennifer Martinez in the sixth inning. Turner allowed just one hit and struck out three. Martinez went 4.2 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.
Lacy Tyler went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in game two. LBSU pounded out 15 hits as a team.
Long Beach State took advantage of two Matador errors in the top of the sixth inning of game two and rallied for three runs to win 3-2. Northridge unlocked a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when a Jamie Pederson RBI double combined with a Micah Putnam RBI single gave the Matadors a 2-0 edge.
Long Beach State then answered in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Jessica Beaver, who connected for a double, scored from third base after Panita Thanatharn reached safely after an error was charged to first baseman, Megan Smith. After a Brooke LeSage walk and a McCauley single, Kourtnee Gervasi then reached safely to first base after a throwing error was issued to CSUN third baseman, Kelly Zakosek, which allowed LeSage and Thanatharn to score and lift LBSU to the 3-2 lead.
Turner held strong in the bottom half of the sixth and seventh innings without allowing a hit. The win was her 13th of the season, after allowing two runs on four hits and six strikeouts.
Long Beach State completes its three-game series with the Matadors tomorrow at 2 pm.
