49ers Host UCLA in Season Finale

49ers Host Season Finale on Thursday LBSU STATISTICS LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 10-ranked Long Beach State women's water polo (15-11, 4-7 MPSF) will head into the regular season finale with No. 3-ranked UCLA (23-3, 10-1 MPSF0 on Thursday at 4 p.m. winners of six of their last eight. Thursday's home match will be the final time in the campus pool for seniors Cassie Azevedo, Tara Campbell, Dolores Johnson and Lindsey Machado. The 49ers are currently tied for ninth place in the MPSF with one week to go in the regular season. The team will most likely play at 1:45 p.m. or 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 27 to open up the MPSF Championships. Azevedo is just four goals away from tying the school-record for goals scored in a career (206), as she leads the team with 52 scores after tallying 11 over the weekend at the Beach Tournament. Azevedo is shooting 46 percent in the pool this season with a team-best 32 steals and 29 assists. Her scoring average ranks first in the MPSF. Azevedo, a three-time All-American, is already the school's all-time leader in steals and assists in a career. Campbell, a member of the Canadian National Team, has started 23 games this season, and long known for her defense at 2-meters, has begun to be more of an offensive pressence, scoring in seven of the last eight games. Campbell has 16 goals this season, nine coming over this most recent stretch. Campbell has also been able to pick up her steal total, grabbing 28 steals on the year, second-most on the team. Machado has played her most minutes in the pool this season, appearing i 19 games iwth four goals and seven steals. Johnson has also played a great deal of quarters as well, appearing in 15 games with eight goals for a 40 percent clip. Three juniors have also made a strong contribution this season, with Christina Wensman scoring 38 goals, second-most on the team and Marina Canetti scoring 30 goals in 26 starts. Canetti has also set the single-season record for earned ejections, with 93, despite not playing the position until this year.Wensman has scored at least two goals in eight of her last 13 games, giving the Washington native the most goals in her career. Goalie Kim Hayes has played every minute in goal as the team's only goalie, tallying 186 saves, as she looks to be just the fourth 49er ever to eclipse 200 saves. |
