NORTHRIDGE, CA -- The Long Beach State softball team scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch to defeat CS Northridge, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon from the Matador Diamond. The game was a make-up after it was originally rained out back on Apr. 3. The win also gave the 49ers the series sweep over the Matadors.
LBSU moved to 20-15, 5-1 Big West, while CSUN fell to 12-15, 1-5 Big West.
Melanie McCauley helped Long Beach State unlock a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, when she led off the inning with a walk. McCauley then advanced to second base on a passed ball, and eventually to third base after a Kourtnee Gervasi sacrifice bunt. McCauley then scored after CSUN catcher Heather Martin allowed another passed ball.
Northridge managed to tie the score at 1-1 in the sixth inning after a solo home run from Amanda Peek.
The 49ers came right back in the seventh inning when Ashley Weber led off the frame with a double. Brooke LeSage was then inserted at first base as a pinch runner. After walks were issued to both Gervasi and Tiffanie Wedell, LeSage was then on third base. LeSage scored after Selena Salazar threw a wild pitch past Michelle Turner.
CSUN had a chance to tie the game with a runner on third base and two outs. However Turner got Jan Mosier to strikeout to end the game.
Turner picked up her league-leading 17th win in the circle after allowing just one run on four hits, with eight strikeouts and no walks. Turner in fact has not issued a walk over her last 23 innings pitched. Turner this week set a school and conference record with her fifth Big West Pitcher of the Week honor.
Jessica Beaver had two of Long Beach State's three total hits.
The 49ers travel to CS Fullerton for a three-game series, Apr. 14-15.
