49ers Head to Palo Alto for Stanford Invite
LONG BEACH, CA-- The 49er track and field program will send its entire squad to the 32nd Annual Nike Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday, the team's largest meet of the regular season. The meet will give the 49ers a chance to size up the nation's competition, as some of the top teams in the country are slated to compete. Some of those teams headed West are: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Boston University, BYU, Colorado, Columbia, Duke, Florida State, Georgetown, Indiana, Iona, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, Providence, Stanford, Tennessee and Virginia. Most of the Pac-10 as well as the entire Big West will also be in attendance. The 2006 Stanford Track and Field Invitational will begin on Friday, March 31 and concludes on Saturday, April 1. This meet usually gives the 49er distance runners their best best at regional qualifying times as well. The 49ers are in the midst of an impressive outdoor season, as The Beach already has seven athletes that are nationally ranked and a combined 42 athletes that rank in the top-five in the Big West, according to flashresults.com. John Temidara (Santa Fe Springs) has made the most noise this spring, ranking first nationally in the triple jump and sixth nationally in the high jump. He is one of six 49er men to rank in the top-five in two different categories. Temidara also ranks fifth in the Big West in the long jump, while leading the way in the triple jump and ranking second in the high jump. Ronald Carter (Gardena) has also made a name for himself, ranking second to Temidara in the Big West triple jump, which is the fourth-best triple jump nationally. The throws program has made a monopoly out of the Big West, putting four athletes in the top-five in the discus, two more in the shot put and javelin and one more in the hammer. Robert Jennings (Campbell), who leads the Big West in the discus, has two nationally ranked marks, in the discus (31st) and the hammer (29th). David Sampson (Cypress) leads the conference in the shot put. On the women's side, Jasmine Winfield (Oceanside) is one of three 49er woman to rank in the top-six in three different categories, leading the conference in the 200 and 400-meters, while ranking fourth in the 100-meter. The duo of Kristina Price (Snelling) and Katelyn Ciarelli (Huntington Beach) are amongst the conference's best throwers. Ciarelli has the second (discus), fourth (javelin) and fifth (hammer) best throws in the Big West, while Price checks into the top-five in the shot (third), discus (third) and hammer (sixth). Kim Heinz' (Florence, MT) conference leading mark in the javelin ranks 10th nationally, while Emily Forsythe (La Crescenta) has the 14th-best high jump nationally. |
