March 25, 2006 Box Score
LONG BEACH, CA - A Panita Thanatharn RBI triple in the sixth inning and a three-run home run from Kourtnee Gervasi in the fourth inning helped the Long Beach State softball team rally past No. 16-ranked Northwestern, 6-5, from the 49er Softball Complex on Saturday.
The win put Long Beach State at 15-14 overall before it opens conference play at CS Northridge on Apr. 1. Northwestern fell to 17-8.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a Kristen Amegin sacrifice pop fly scored Tammy Williams.
Long Beach State quickly responded in the bottom of the inning when Breezy Goad notched a solo home run (her second of the season) over the right field wall.
Northwestern came right back in the top of the second inning with two more runs to take a 3-1 lead, before the 49ers added a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Garland Cooper's RBI double in the top of the fourth (scoring both Katie Logan and Williams) suddenly gave Northwestern a 5-2 lead.
Then it was Gervasi who came up big for LBSU when her two-out, three-run home run over the right field wall tied the game at 5-5. Both Jonae Perez and Lacy Tyler scored on the Gervasi home run.
After Perez was issued a walk to start the sixth inning, Franciska Morlet was placed on first base as the pinch runner. Thanatharn was then used as the pinch hitter for Melanie McCauley. Thanatharn¹s triple down the right field line scored Morlet from first base.
Starting pitcher Michelle Turner induced three straight groundouts to second baseman, Tiffanie Wedell to end the game.
The win was Turner's 12th of the season.
