LONG BEACH, CA – The Long Beach State softball team swept its double-header vs. Southern Utah at the 49er Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. LBSU took game one, 5-0, and game two, 8-3. The win improved the 49ers to 6-3 on the season. Southern Utah fell to 1-8.
Junior Michelle Turner (Buena Park) earned her third straight win in the circle after her three-hit shutout performance in game one. Turner (4-2) also recorded a season-high nine strikeouts.
A Lacy Tyler (La Mirada) single in the first inning scored Jessica Beaver (Hemet) to make it 1-0, LBSU. The 49ers widened the lead with a three-run second inning to pad the lead (4-0). Turner provided the big hit with an RBI double to plate Tiffanie Wedell (Hacienda Heights) and Brianna Goad (Norco). Stefanie Trutanic (Harbor City) scored the game's final run on a throwing error by Southern Utah second baseman, Bobbi Jo Merrill.
Turner finished 2-of-4 from the plate with two RBI.
Southern Utah opened game two with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the 49ers responded with three runs in the bottom the inning to take the 3-1 lead. Beaver's triple to lead off the inning was the first triple of the season for the 49ers. After the bases were loaded, SUU pitcher Amy Sauer walked Kourtnee Gervasi (Baldwin Park) to plate Beaver. Another walk to Tyler scored Wedell.
The Thunderbirds tied the score at 3-3 after two runs in the top of the third, before LBSU answered with three more runs in the bottom of the frame. Turner started the inning with a double and was quickly driven home after a Tyler RBI single. Franciska Morlet (Whittier) also provided a key hit with an RBI single to score Tyler.
Panita Thanatharn (Chino Hills) went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Long Beach State travels to San Diego State for the 2006 Aztec Invitational, Feb. 23-25.
