Dirtbags Fall on Sunday in Pitcher's Duel HOUSTON, TX-- Oklahoma (6-2) was able to win the Sunday finale against No. 15-ranked Long Beach State (6-4) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon as part of the Coca Cola Classic on a frigid 41-degree day. LBSU took the first two games of the tournament on Friday and Saturday. Mission Viejo native PJ Sandoval (2-1) went six innings for the Sooners for the win, giving up one run on four hits, not giving up a hit until the fourth. Vance Worley (0-2) had his strongest outing of the season, giving up two runs on six hits over six innings as well. John Brownell, despite putting runners on over his three innings of work, pitched a scoreless three innings for his first save. Evan Longoria finished off a strong week with three hits, as the junior hit .538 this past week. The Beach had a chance to tie it in the sixth, but Robert Perry was thrown out at the plate for the third out following a single to center, keeping it at 2-1. Evan Longoria's RBI single in the fourth broke up Sandoval's no-hitter with one out as LBSU cut the Sooner lead to 2-1. Chuck Sindlinger was the benefactor of Longoria's base hit, as he scored from second following a hit by pitch and stolen base. Aaron Reza's RBI single in the third gave Oklahoma a 2-0 lead, after an RBI single from Jackson Williams in the second made it 1-0. The Dirtbags return home for a seven game homestand beginning with Illinois-Chicago next weekend starting on Friday. |
