Righthander Gives Up Three Hits For First LBSU Win

HOUSTON, TX-- Andrew Carpenter (1-0) behind seven strong innings led No. 15-ranked Long Beach State (6-3) to an upset win over host No. 5-ranked Rice (5-2) 4-1 at the Owls own Coca Cola Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Carpenter went seven strong innings, striking out a career-best eight and giving up one run on three hits. He walked two and used just 103 pitches leaving with a 4-1 lead. Donnie Hume, despite putting two runners on in the ninth, got his third save with two scoreless innings.

Evan Longoria had two hits from the top of the lineup, as LBSU has won the first two games of the tournament.

The Dirtbags got to All-American Joe Savery (1-1) in the third, scoring two runs to lead 2-0. Longoria's second hit of the day, plated the first run, before a double play ball with the bases loaded made it 2-0. LBSU which had three steals going into the game, stole three in the inning.

Second baseman Chuck Sindlinger made the defensive grab of the day, diving into a puddle of water to the left of first base, getting the ground off of Aaron Luna's bat, and getting Luna at first.

Sindlinger then led off the fifth with a single, stole second, dove into third on a fly out and then scored on an infield single to give LBSU a 3-1 lead, chasing Savery from the game. Savery went four and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on four hits.

Tito Cruz came around to score in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 after reaching base on a two-base error by Luna.

The Dirtbags close out the Coca Cola Classic on Sunday at 10 a.m. PST against Oklahoma.
