Dirtbags Roll Past Lamar 11-6 HOUSTON, TX-- No. 15-ranked Long Beach State (5-3) rolled into the Lone Star State and scored a season-high in runs and hits (16) in defeating Lamar (4-3) 11-6 in the opener of the Coca Cola Classic. Every starter had at least one hit, as Scott Bradley went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Chuck Sindlinger, Danny Espinosa and Evan Longoria each added two hits a piece. Longoria's third home run of the season, led off the Dirtbag first, as the leadoff hitter took the first pitch he saw and sailed it over the centerfield fence. Two more hits in the inning led to a 2-0 advantage, as Espinosa scored following a Tito Cruz RBI groundout. Bradley's two-run double in the third gave LBSU a 4-1 advantage as Lamar starter Allen Harrington (0-2) gave up four runs on seven hits over the first three innings in his first start of the season. Jared Hughes (2-0) countered with five runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings for LBSU, as Lamar continued to battle despite continuing to follow behind. Lamar closed to within 4-3 in the fifth, scoring an unearned run in the third as a comebacker to Hughes was ruled an error and allowed the first run to score, before two errors, including another comebacker to Hughes, and two unearned runs brought the Cardinals to within one. The Dirtbags then came back with two runs in the fifth off a two-run single by Sindlinger off of the glove of Brian Needam to make it 6-3. Collin DeLome then came back with a two-run homer to left center to close to within 6-5. The Beach then exploded for five runs in the sixth to lead 11-5. Three-straight RBI singles, ignited by a Bradley single to make it 7-5 in the sixth, gave LBSU a 9-5 advantage. Then with the bases loaded following an intentional walk to Longoria, Danny Espinosa laced a two-run double to make it 11-5, chasing Chuckie Platt from the game. Platt gave up five runs on five hits over one and one-third inning. The Coca Cola Classic continues on Saturday with LBSU at Rice at 11 a.m. PST, and Oklahoma taking on Lamar. On Sunday, the Dirtbags close out the tournament with the Sooners at 10 a.m. PST. |
