Cal Ties Series with Comeback in the Ninth BERKELEY, CA-- Brandon Boesch and Chris Errecart hit back-to-back solo homers off of closer Brett Andrade (0-1) in the ninth inning to give California (2-4) a come from behind 3-2 victory over visiting No. 12-ranked Long Beach State (4-1), 3-2. Andrade after pitching a perfect eighth, gave up a leadoff homer to Boesch to tie the game at 2-2, before Errecart's game-winner on an 0-1 pitch ended it. It was Andrade's first blown save of the year as reliever Alex Trafton (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win. Evan Longoria went 2-for-3 with his second homer of the season, while Boesch hit two homers. Andrew Carpenter was superb in his second LBSU start, going seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, striking out two and walking one. Carpenter retired seven and nine in a row over his time on the mound. He yielded to Andrade with a 2-1 lead in the eighth. Cal starter Michael Cooper, after pitching to the minimum over the previous 14 batters, loaded the bases in the seventh, before pinch hitter Scott Bradley poked an RBI single past a diving second baseman Kyle Spaker to give LBSU a 2-1 lead. Cooper gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings, leaving the following inning after giving up the lead. Longoria put LBSU up 1-0 in the first with a homer to left field to make it 1-0, before Boesch tied it in the fourth with a homer to right field after Carpenter had retired the previous seven in a row. The Dirtbags conclude the series in the Bay Area on Sunday at 1 p.m., before returning to Southern California for a Tuesday affair at Pepperdine at 2 p.m. on Valentine's Day. |
