Turner Lifts LBSU to Victory
LAS VEGAS, NV -- Led by junior transfer Michelle Turner, the Long Beach State softball team opened up its 2006 season with a 4-0 win over Illinois-Chicago Friday night at the Alexis Resort Softball Classic hosted by UNLV. Turner pitched a one-hit shutout (with five strikeouts) and hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. The 49ers (1-0) unlocked a 0-0 tie in the top of the third inning when Turner connected for a double to centerfield to plate Jonae Perez to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. Turner cruised the rest of the way en route to her first win in a 49er uniform, allowing just one hit over the last three innings. For the game Turner went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Wedell and Beaver both went 2-for-3 with a run scored. The 49ers won 11-6 in the late night game over Southern Utah to improve to 2-0 on the season. Long Beach State responed from a 1-0 deficit with a seven-run third inning. A Wedell single through the right side would plate Brianna Goad to tie the score at 1-1. After a pair of runs from Wedell and Beaver, Turner hit a sacrifice fly to score Lacy Tyler. Lindsay Russo delivered the big hit with a double to left center to score both Kourtnee Gervasi and Melanie McCauley. Southern Utah narrowed the score to 7-6 after three runs in the top of the third inning and two more runs in the fifth inning. But the 49ers added four more runs in the botton of the fifth to go up 11-6. Beaver provided the biggest hit of the inning with a double to left field scored Goad, Russo, and McCauley Tyler (1-0) picked up the win for the 49ers allowing two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work. Jennifer Martinez started the game and allowed four runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of action. Beaver and Wedell were a combined 5-of-8 from the plate with five RBI and three runs scored. LBSU faces Washington on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
