Dirtbags Hold on for 7-6 Win BERKELEY, CA--Robert Perry in his first trip back to the San Francisco Bay Area after transferring from Santa Clara went 4-for-5 with two RBIs as No. 12-ranked Long Beach State (4-0) remained undefeated to start the year with a 7-6 win over host California (1-4). Donnie Hume got the final five outs for his second save, while Scott Turmail (1-0) picked up his first collegiate victory. The Dirtbags took advantage of two Cal relievers to re-take a 7-4 lead with three runs in the sixth. Perry's two out single to left scored pinch runner Ted Pattock from second, before an Evan Longoria single made it 6-4. Sean Boatright's RBI double made it 7-4, one of two doubles on the day for Boatright. Boatright, Brandon Godfrey and Tito Cruz added two hits a piece, while Chris Errecart drove in three of the first four Cal runs, going 2-for-3 on the day. Pinch-hitter Charlie Cutler cut the deficit to 7-6 in the seventh with a two-run, pinch-hit double off of reliever Andrew Liebel. Turmail was the benefactor of the Dirtbag offense, pitching one and two-third shutout innings, before yielding to Liebel. Donnie Hume came on in the eighth to get two outs, with runners at second and third, getting two groundballs to get out of the inning, a forceout at the plate from Longoria at third, for the second out of the inning. Jared Hughes lasted just four and a third innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, as he cruised through the first four innings before giving up three runs in the fifth. Brandon Morrow did not fair much better, gving up four runs on eight hits over five innings as both starters figured in the no-decision. Hughes worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth to keep it 3-1, before LBSU added a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Hughes would then be chased from the game in the fifth after relinquishing the lead with three runs, as a two-run bases loaded single by Errecart, was followed by an RBI single by Mike Van Winden tied it at 4-4. The Dirtbags got to Morrow in the the second, scoring three times (one earned) on two Bear errors. Tito Cruz' ground-rule double got LBSU on the board, before a sacrifice fly made it 2-0. A Perry single made it 3-0. A solo homer by Errecart cut the LBSU lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third. The Dirtbags continue its series in the Bay Area on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. |
