49ers Bolt Into Big West Tournament with Win
LONG BEACH, CA- No. 20-ranked Long Beach State (13-3-1, 4-0-1 Big West) assured itself its second-straight Big West Tournament berth following a 3-0 win over visiting UC Irvine (3-12-1, 0-6-0 Big West) paced by two goals from Hayley Bolt. The win also broke year-old records for wins, 13, and shutouts, now 12, set last year when the 49ers finished the season 12-5-3 in the first round of the conference tournament. The match, which did not produce its first shot until the 34th minute, saw the 49ers get on the board in the 43rd minute. Kristin Childers scored her second goal of the season as Kim Silos' shot of the cross bar, following a foul, rebounded right to Cilders who headed it in to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. The Beach finished off the match outshooting UCI, 11-to-4, holding the Anteaters without a shot for the first 50 minutes of the contest. The 49ers and Bolt then went on the offensive in the second half, as the sophomore midfielder dribbled up the field in the 48th minute revved back and fired a shot from 20 yards left to make it 2-0. Bolt was not done as she scored again at 62:36, taking a cross from the right side from Dana Farquhar and heading in her eighth goal of the season from five yards out. The win also propelled the 49er Athletics Department into an early 4-0 lead in the annual Black and Blue series between the two athletics deparments. The 49ers close out the regular season at CS Fullerton in a nationally televised match on Fox Soccer Channel at 8 p.m.on Wednesday, and host UC Riverside on Sunday in the regular season finale at 1 p.m. |
