49ers to Host Big West Tourney Following 1-0 Win
FULLERTON, CA-- Long Beach State (14-3-1, 5-0-1 Big West) secured at least a share of its first-ever Big West title, and will host next weekend's Big West Tournament starting on November 3, following its 1-0 win over defending champion, CS Fullerton (8-7-2, 3-2-1) on Wednesday evening before a national television audience. Kim Silos put the 49ers on the board with 25 seconds left in the half as that was all she wrote, as Yeraldy Hurtado dribbled the ball deep into the left side, before passing to Silos, who beat two defenders and then scored to the left of CS Fullerton goalkeeper Karen Bardsley to make it 1-0 at 44:35. The win extended the school-record for victories and shutouts (13) and tied the school-record for conference victories. Emmy Dokulil, a reserve senior starting on Senior Day, had a chance to tie in the 76th minute, as a gap opened up in the box, and she shot wide left keeping the game scoreless. Brianna Buffington had a chance two minutes later as her high fly ball went off the top of the bar and was then cleared by the 49er defense. The Titans had two chances to score in the first half, the only two saves for 49er goalkeeper Liz Ramos all night. Ramos caught a shot in the 30th shot by Brianna Buffington and then caught another in the 34th minute by Kristen Boujos. The 49ers close out the regular season with UC Riverside at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
