49ers Off To Hawaii For Final Fall Tournament Beach Takes Part In Kent Youel Invitational

This Week: The Long Beach State women's golf team will head across the Pacific Ocean to the island of Oahu next week for the Kent Youel Invitational at the Kapolei Golf Course in Honolulu, HI on October 24 and 25. The 49ers are coming off a 14th place finish at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
The Coach: Sue Ewart is in her 11th year as the head coach of the 49er women's golf team. The 49ers advanced to their first-ever NCAA Regional appearance in 2006 and finished in second place in the Big West Conference.
Ewart On Kent Youel: "I know the girls are excited to return to a course that they've had some good results in the past few years. We'll be playing 36 holes on Tuesday and complete the round with 18 on Wednesday. We had a bit of a disappointing tournament in Washington a couple of weeks ago, and the team is ready to conclude the fall season with a strong showing."
Travel Squad For Kent Youel: As of Friday, the travel squad for next week's tournament will consist of: Katy Barrett, Brenda Chhuor, Kay Hoey, Beth Holtermann, and Josefine Lindbergh.
Last Year At Kent Youel: Last year the 49ers finished in third place out of 18 teams with a 302 at the Kent Youel Invitational. Kay Hoey tied for third place with a 223 (76-74-73), while Hayley Wilkinson tied for fifth place with a 224 (73-74-77). Katy Barrett also had a strong showing, tying for 12th place with a 228 (77-77-74).
Participating Teams At Kent Youel: The 2006 18-team field for the Kent Youel Invitational at the Kapolei Golf Course will consist of: Boise State, Cal State Northridge, Coastal Carolina, Hawaii, Idaho, Long Beach State, Nevada, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, San Diego State, San Francisco, SMU, Southern Illinois, Toledo, UC Irvine
National Rankings: Last year the 49ers finished the year ranked No. 36 in the nation according to Golfweek.com and No. 40 by Golfstat. This year the 49ers are currently ranked No. 75 by Golfweek and No. 77 by Golfstat. Individually, Kay Hoey is ranked No. 39 by Golfstat and No. 74 by Golfweek.
Hoey Named Big West Golfer of the Month: Junior Kay Hoey was selected as the Big West Female Golfer of the Month for September by the conference office. Hoey finished first at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic and tied for sixth at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational. This is the sixth time Hoey has earned league Golfer of the Month honors.
Hoey Breaks School Record: Kay Hoey's 209 (67-74-68) at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic was a new school-record, breaking her previous mark of 216 which she had done on three previous occasions. Hoey's opening round of 67 at that event was also a new school-record.
Katy Barrett: Barrett tied for 47th place with a 240 (82-79-79) at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational. Her best fall tournament was the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic where she tied for 40th with a 229 (77-79-73). She followed that up with a 231 (78-79-74) at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational, to tie for 39th place. Barrett was a first team All-Big West selection last season for the 49ers.
Brenda Chhuor: Chhuor is a true freshman out of Cerritos, CA. Chhuor finished tied for 59th at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational with a 26 (80-84-82). She competed at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational and finished tied for 52nd place at 235 (72-80-83).
Kay Hoey: A two-time first team All-Big West Conference selection and a second team All-American in 2005, Hoey is off to a fast start in 2006-07. She won the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic with a school-record 209 (67-74-68). Her 67 in the opening round was a new school-record as well. At the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational, she tied for sixth place with a 220 (71-72-77). In her last tournament, Hoey tied for 21st place at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational with a 231 (76-77-78). Hoey was selected as the Big West Female Golfer of the Month for September.
Beth Holtermann: Holtermann finished 74th at the recent Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational with a 258 (92-83-83). She finished in 10th place at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational with a six-over 222 (71-75-76). The finish was the second-best in her 49er career. At the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, Holtermann tied for 46th place with a 230 (77-76-77). She was a second team All-Big West selection last year.
Josefine Lindbergh: Lindbergh tied for 51st place at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational with a 242 (75-82-85). The 75 she shot in the first round tied her season-best round this fall. Lindbergh took 49th place at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational with a 234 (76-83-75). In the opening tournament she finished 51st with a 232 (76-80-76) at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.
Kira Murashige: An honorable mention All-Big West pick last year, Murashige competed at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic and tied for 52nd place shooting a 234 (75-82-77).
