Petri Named Assistant Coach for Water Polo LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State Women's Water Polo Coach Catherine von Schwarz announced that two-time Olympian Heather Petri has been named the team's top assistant. Petri, a former two-time All-American at Cal, is an eight-year veteran of the U.S. National Team. Petri and von Schwarz were teammates on Team USA for five years and were on the same professional team in Italy. Petri won a Silver Medal in Sydney at the 2000 Olympics and went on to win a Bronze Medal at the 2004 Games in Athens. One of the most experienced players on the U.S. National Team, Petri has helped Team USA to eight titles and 14 top-three finishes in international competition since 2000. Petri played at Cal from 1997 to 2001, scoring 96 goals, including a career-best 33 in 1999. She was named a second team All-American as a junior in 1999 and was an honorable mention selection in 1998. She was also a three-time All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection, earning second team acolades in 1999 and honorable mention honors in 2001 and 1998. The two-year captain (1999, 2001) led the Golden Bears to second place finishes at the Collegiate National Tournament in 1997 and 1998. The Northern California native prepped at Miramonte High School, where she was a founding member of the girl's program which won the North Coast Section Champoionship in 1995. Petri was also a member of the U.S. Junior National Team in 1995 and a member of the U.S. National "B" Team in 1997. |
