LONG BEACH, CA-- Senior All-American Robert Tarr pounded down 14 kills and Long Beach State dominated at the net as the No. 1-ranked 49ers (5-0) raced to a 30-20, 30-14, 30-25 win over Cal Baptist (0-4) on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers out-blocked the Lancers 14.0 to 4.0 for the match.
Long Beach hit an impressive .402 (45-12-82) for the evening and recorded three solo blocks and 22 block assists. Francisco Valdez and Teddy Liles both contributed eight kills and Duncan Budinger added seven. Budinger and Tarr both had seven blocks while Liles chipped in with five. All-American setter Tyler Hildebrand finnished with three kills, 31 assists and two aces and guided the 49er offense to perfection.
"Our blocking defense was great tonight," said Head Coach Alan Knipe. "If we didn't block it, we touched it. And if we didn't touch it, we transitioned it. We are getting more disciplined. I thought Tyler's serving was as good as it's ever been tonight."
Hildebrand had two aces, and the 49ers had nine as a team, but Long Beach was able to force numerous bad passes by the Lancers disrupting their offense. Cal Baptist hit just .149 for the evening. Seidu Ajanako led the way with 11 kills and five digs. Yukai Sun added nine kills and six digs.
In game one the 49ers broke away from an early 2-2 tie to take a 7-2 lead. That advantage grew to 16-8 as the 49ers coasted, 30-20. Long Beach recorded 9.0 team blocks in game one as Tarr and Budinger both had five blocks. LBSU hit .355 in the game while the Lancers hit just .086. Game two was all Long Beach as they jumped to leads of 4-0, 7-1 and 12-3. The Beach had four aces in game two and hit .545 (16-4-22). CBU hit .000 (6-6-19) in the game.
Game three was the only competitive game as Cal Baptist looked as if they may force a game four. Tied at 21-21, the Lancers took a 25-23 lead. But that lead wouldn't last long. A CBU service error, a kill by Valdez and a lift and hitting error by Corey Spence gave LBSU a 27-25 lead. LBSU would score the final seven points of the game, winning 30-25.
The 49ers hit the road next weekend when they play at Stanford on Friday night and at the University of the Pacific on Saturday evening. |
