STANFORD, CA-- Senior All-American Robert Tarr pounded down 21 kills as No. 1-ranked Long Beach State came away with a 30-22, 30-21, 27-30, 30-22 win at Stanford on Friday evening. The 49ers improve to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF with the win while the Cardinal fall to 2-6 and 1-3 in league play.
Long Beach hit an impressive .403 in the match and recorded 28 block assists. Senior Duncan Budinger added 13 kills while hitting .667 (13-1-18) and had five block assists. Teddy Liles and Paul Lotman both had 11 kills. Liles chipped in with nine blocks while Tarr added six.
Senior setter Tyler Hildebrand finished with 55 assists, four kills, four digs and four block assists. Libero Tyler Caldwell had 10 digs and two assists.
Stanford hit just .264 for the evening. Ben Reddy led the Cardinal with 18 kills and William Clayton added 13. Long Beach out-blocked the Cardinal 15.0 to 6.0.
In game one the 49ers hit .400 (17-5-30) as Tarr led the way with six kills in the 30-22 victory. The Cardinal started the match slowly, hitting just .100 (11-8-30) in game number one. Stanford played better in game two, hitting .320, but the 49ers hit .379 and controlled the match at the net in the 30-21 win. In game four the 49ers hit .556 (18-3-27). Long Beach also registered eight service aces as Lotman had a career-high three.
The 49ers continue play in Northern California when they play at Pacific on Saturday evening at 7 pm. |
