Tulowitzki Leads Beach to 4-3 Win
GOLETA, CA-- All-American shortstop Troy Tulowitzki drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, as No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (33-16, 11-5 Big West) salvaged the final game of the series with a 4-3 win over host UC Santa Barbara (21-26, 3-9 Big West). The game became a battle of the bullpens, as Nate Holguin (1-1) gave up a one-out single to Cole Jacobsen and then balked the senior to second base. Tulowitzki than drove a ball to leftfield, allowing Jacobsen to come around and score and give LBSU the lead, after they close a 3-0 lead in the middle innings. Tulowitzki finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, as Jacobsen also had a multi-hit game. Dirtbag closer Neil Jamison (4-0) picked up the win, getting the final two outs in the eighth before pitching a perfect ninth. Jared Hughes gave up three infield hits over five innings of work, striking out seven and walking four, and leaving with a 3-2 lead, before Brian Anderson gave up an unearned run in the sixth to force a tie. UCSB tied it following a two-out walk, as CJ Cook came around to score on a double by Matt Kalafatis and ensuing error by leftfielder Danny Mocny. Anderson ended up pitching two and one-third innigs of relief. Hughes struggled in his final inning of work, after crusing through the first four innings as the Dirtbags built a 3-0 lead. The ball did not leave the infield in the fifth inning as UCSB closed to within 3-2 after loading the bases with two infield singles and a walk. A Hughes wild pitch made it 3-1, prior to a slow rolling groundout down the first base line made it 3-2. The Beach though held on as Tulowitzki speared a line drive to end the inning to strand runners on the corners. The Dirtbags took a 3-0 lead off of Gaucho starter Alex Graham after four and a half innings, as Graham gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings. Boatright did not wait long to continue his hit streak, as an RBI double in the first inning gave The Beach its first lead of the series, at 1-0, and extended the streak to 26 games. LBSU went up 3-0 in the fifth inning thanks to a two-out single from Cole Jacobsen followed by an RBI double by Tulowitzki. Hughes also got the dubious honor of hit by pitch leader, as his hit of David Figoni in the third inning gave him the single-season record with 18. The Dirtbags return home next Friday for the team's final regular season homestand, against Cal Poly, for a three-game series, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's Mike Weathers Show starting at 6 p.m. at Cirivello's will feature outfielder Tom Sarti and trainer Nate Peck. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
