LONG BEACH, CA-- Cesar Ramos (10-5) took a shutout into the ninth inning, before tiring with two outs in the ninth, as the No. 12-ranked Long Beach State Dirtbags (34-16, 12-4 Big West) won the series opener 4-1 with No. 19-ranked Cal Poly (31-17, 9-4 Big West). Chris Jones drove in two runs, while Troy Tulowitzki and Danny Mocny had two hits a piece. Sean Boatright with a single in the seventh inning is now one hit away from the school-record for consecutive hits (27), held by Todd Jennings in 2003 and Rob Townley in 1979.

Ramos gave up his only run in the ninth, after retiring seven in succession late in the contest, as Ramos gave up seven hits and struck out six. Brian Anderson came on in a 4-1 game with two outs in the ninth and watched as Steve Velazco laid out and caught a sinking liner near the rightfield line with a runner on second base, to end the contest for his second save of the year.

Jones gave The Beach a 2-0 lead in the first as a single to the rightside scored Tulowitzki from second, and then allowed Boatright to score, after rightfielder Jimmy Van Ostrand's throw got away from catcher Kyle Blumenthal. The Dirtbags tacked on a run in the second off a Steve Velazco single to center. Jones finished the scoring with a perfectly placed squeeze bunt with no outs and runners on the corners in the seventh to give LBSU a 4-0 advantage.

Boatright, who walked in his first at-bat and was retired on his next two at-bats, was able to fight off a pitch on two strikes and hit it to right field and extend his hit streak to 27 games in the seventh inning.

The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
