Estrada Reaches the Eighth, But Cal Poly's Shull Out Does Him

LONG BEACH, CA-- Marco Estrada (7-2) settled down after a tough start, but it was Cal Poly's Jimmy Shull (8-5) with the outstanding pitching performance to even the series with No. 12-ranked Long Beach State (34-17, 12-5 Big West) and give the No. 19-ranked Mustangs (32-17, 10-4 Big West) a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Shull, who last Saturday up-ended CS Fullerton, pitched a complete game four-hitter, giving up one run, while striking out five on 105 pitches. Shull is now 4-1 in Big West play, with his only loss coming to Pacific.

Sean Boatright was one of Shull's victims, going 0-for-4, as he went hitless for the first time since on March 18, a span of 27 straight games, the second-longest hit streak in school history

Cal Poly went up 3-0 after two innings, as two of the team's first three runs were unearned. Estrada who walked a batter and hit another in the first, watched as both runners moved up 90 feet on a passed ball, before a sacrifice fly by Kyle Blumenthal made it 1-0.

In the second inning the Mustangs added to their lead as a Brent Walker two-out single to center allowed Sean Alexander to score, before a fielding error by centerfielder Sean Boatright allowed Steve Pettit to come around and make it 3-0.

Marco Estrada then settled down, at one point retiring 11 in a row in the middle innings, before throwing into the eighth inning, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out six and walking just two. He tossed seven and one-third innings.

A one-out walk by Jimmy Van Ostrand eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

The finale of the series will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. It will also be senior day for the team's six seniors: Brian Anderson, Steve Hammond, Cole Jacobsen, Neil Jamison, Danny Mocny and Steve Velazco. LBSU closes out the regular season at CS Fullerto next weekend and at USC on May 25.
