Anderson and Jamison Shut the Door on the Mustangs

LONG BEACH, CA-- On senior day, it was the senior bullpen of Brian Anderson and Neil Jamison that shut the door on No. 19-ranked Cal Poly (32-18, 10-5 Big West) as No. 12-ranked Long Beach State (35-17, 13-5 Big West) won the rubber game over the Mustangs, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Jared Hughes (8-2) won for the seventh time in eight starts by pitching five and one-third innings, before handing it over to the nation's best bullpen with a 2-1 lead. Anderson pitched one and two-thirds shutouts innings, striking out the final two batters he faced, before Jamison pitched the final two innings for his 11th save.

Hughes struck out seven on the day, as the bullpen duo struck out another four, including a key batter in the eighth.

Jamison pitched to one over the minimum in his outing, benefitting from an interference-ruled double play in the eighth which kept the game at 2-1. With Brandon Roberts attempting to steal on a strikeout, Jimmy Van Ostrand interfered with Dirtbag catcher Chris Jones. Van Ostrand was out by his own swing and umpire Paul Cohen correctly ruled Roberts out as well on the interference. Jamison then gave up a leadoff single, before Jones, following a popup, caught Josh Lansford napping off of second. Pinch-hitter JJ Owen then struck out to end the game.

The Dirtbags twice took leads in the game, as Evan Longoria's fifth homer of the season, a solo shot in the second, gave LBSU an early 1-0 lead. The Beach re-took the lead at 2-1 in the fifth off a one-out double from Brandon Godfrey.

Rightfielder Jordan Struble kept the game at 2-1 in the sixth, making an inning ending catch in right by crashing into the rightfield wall.

The Dirtbags close out the regular season on the road for four games, beginning with a three-game series at CS Fullerton next weekend and the regular season finale at USC on May 25. Wednesday's guest on the Mike Weathers Show will be Matt Fitts.
