FULLERTON, CA-- Ricky Romero (11-4) gave up just two hits over his first seven innings, and just six over eight innings, as top-ranked CS Fullerton Titans (39-12, 14-2 Big West) won the opener of college baseball's best rivalry, defeating arch rival No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (35-18, 13-6 Big West) 7-2 on Friday evening. The 49ers made four errors on the night.

Romero had a no-hitter through four and two-thirds and had a two-hit shutout through seven innings, before surrending two runs on four hits in the eighth. Romero gave up two runs on six hits over eight innings.

The Titans jumped on Cesar Ramos (10-6) early, going up 5-0 after two innings thanks to a four-run second inning. Rightfielder Steve Velazco did a lot of running in the second, chasing down back-to-back extra base hits down the line as a triple by Trevor Mortensen and a double and fielding error it right by Ronnie Prettyman made it 2-0. On a squeeze following a hit by pitch Ramos threw wide of the first base bag to make it 3-0, before a two-run single by Justin Turner made it 5-0.

Ramos after giving up those runs in the second, retired the next seven in a row, and settled down to give up just one run over over the next five innings. Overall, Ramos gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in seven innings of work.

The Beach meanwhile stranded two runners at third base early on, both after leadoff errors in the second and sixth innings.

The sellout crowd of 3,554 was the third largest in Goodwin Field history.

The two programs do battle twice more this weekend, with Saturday's game nationally televised on CSTV (Direct TV 610) at 6 p.m. and Sunday's game at 1 p.m. televised on Fox College Sports.
