Dueces Wild Evens Series with 5-1 Win
FULLERTON, CA-- Dueces were working for the No. 10-ranked Dirtbags (36-18, 14-6 Big West) and especially for Evan Longoria, as the junior third baseman drove in three runs, to lead The Beach to a 5-1 victory over top-ranked CS Fullerton (39-13, 14-3 Big West). The win on Saturday, evened the series and gave LBSU three wins this season over the top-rated team in the land. Longoria drove in two runs in the eighth and the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, both with two balls, two strikes and two outs. The Dirtbags broke open the game in the eighth, scoring three times to lead 5-1. Longoria used his second-straight, two-ball, two-strike count to lace a two-out single to center to score two and give LBSU a 4-1 lead in the eighth. Chris Jones then came through with a double down the leftfield line to make it 5-1. But Longoria was not done yet, making bare-handing a bunt down the third base line to end the eighth with a runner on first. Marco Estrada (8-2) turned it over to the bullpen after six strong innings, as the junior scattered six hits and gave up just one run on 74 pitches. Estrada struck out two and walked one, leaving with a 2-1 lead. It was Estrada's first win in three starts. Steve Hammond was able to work out of trouble in his only inning of work, the seventh, giving up two one-out singles, before catching Bobby Andrews trying to steal third and forcing Blake Davis into a flyball to keep the contest at 2-1. Brian Anderson then pitched a scoreless eighth and Neil Jamison hurled a perfect ninth. Longoria made the Titans pay in the sixth inning to give LBSU a 2-1 lead. Roemer intentionally walked Troy Tulowitzki with a runner on third and two outs, faced Longoria in a 1-1 tie. With a two-ball, two-strike count, Longoria laced a single to left to give LBSU a 2-1. LBSU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a leadoff single by Struble, his third hit of the series. Struble came around to score on a infield hit by Chuck Sindlinger that third baseman Ronnie Prettyman threw wide of first to allow Struble to come home. Fullerton came right back with a run in the bottom of the third to tie it at 1-1. Struble now has four hits in the series, after going 2-for-4 today. Wes Roemer (5-3) gave up five runs on 10 hits over seven and two-thirds innings. The announced crowd tonight was 3,554, the same as Friday night, tying it for third-largest in club history, and doubling the series by exactly 3,554 fans.
