LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 24-ranked Long Beach State softball team claimed its second straight Big West Conference Championship with a 2-1 victory in nine innings over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. On Saturday (May 7), LBSU was guaranteed a share of the conference crown after its two victories, and today the victory assured the 49ers of the outright title.
Long Beach State improved to 36-14, 16-2 Big West, while UC Santa Barbara fell to 26-19, 9-9 Big West.
Oli Keohohou proved to be the spark for the 49ers as her solo home run in the fourth inning tied the game at 1-1, and her RBI single in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and the bases loaded was the final difference. Lindsay Marksbury, who scored the game-winning run, reached base on a walk with two outs. A Lauren Johnson single advanced Marksbury to second base. LBSU loaded the bases after Jessica Beaver was issued a walk.
Meredith Cervenka collected her 22nd victory in the circle after allowing just one run on five hits and seven strikeouts. The 22 victories tied for fourth most in a single-season in school history. Keohohou finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Long Beach State has won five conference championships since 1996, and has posted a 51-8 mark in conference play since the 2003 season.
The 49ers wrap up league play with a three-game series at UC Riverside May 13-14.
