UCSB Takes Out Another 49er Ace
GOLETA, CA-- For the second straight year, UC Santa Barbara got to a Long Beach State ace, as UC Santa Barbara (20-25, 2-8 Big West) took the opener of the three-game series over No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (32-15, 10-3 Big West) 8-6 on a windy Friday afternoon. Last year, the Gauchos got to National Player of the Year Jered Weaver, and ended up sweeping the three-game series at Blair Field. The win today, snapped a five-game win for the Dirtbags, as UCSB won for the first time in eight tries. Cesar Ramos (9-5) did not have his good stuff today, working his second-shortest outing of his career, of just three and one-third innings, giving up a career-worst seven runs on a career-tying 10 hits. Ramos' two shortest career outings both came during his freshman year, three and a third innings and two and a third innings. One bright spot was Sean Boatright, who extended his hit streak to 24 straight games with a lacing single in the fourth inning, and who finished with four hits. UCSB countered with 12 hits as every starter had at least one hit. Steve Morlock (5-8) gave up four runs on seven hits over five and two-third innings to pick up the win, benefiting from a six-run third inning by UCSB. Justin Segal then took over and pitched three shutout innings before giving up a two-run homer to Troy Tulowitzki with two outs in the ninth to make it 8-6. Alex McRobbie than came on after Boatright's double chased Segal from the game, and got a one-pitch save, his 10th of the season. The Gauchos batted around and scored six runs on five hits in the third inning to give UCSB a 7-0 lead off of Ramos. Four straight base hits by the Gauchos led to the runs, as back-to-back RBI singles were followed by a two-run single by Bill Rowe and a two-run homer by Matt Kalafatis. LBSU came right back with three runs to close to 7-3, as a two-run single by Brandon Godfrey, followed by an RBI single from Steve Velazco closed the gap. Boatright just missed a homer in the fifth inning, as he settled for an RBI double to make it 7-4. Donnie Hume pitched well in relief of Ramos, giving up just a solo homer in the seventh to Matt Wilkerson to make it 8-4, after pitching three shutout innings. Hume went three and two-thirds innings for The Beach, giving up one run on two hits. Friday's game marked the return of Godfrey at first base, who missed the last 10 games due to a violation of unspecified team rules. UCSB also had a returning player, as starting infielder Chris Malec returned to the lineup after 10 games due to cancer, playing short in the seventh. The Dirtbags continue the series on Saturday and Sunday with both games starting at 1 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
