Dirtbags Come up a Run Short
GOLETA, CA-- No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (32-16, 10-4 Big West) mounted a three-run rally in the eighth inning, but could not get past closer Alex McRobbie, as The Beach fell 7-6 at UC Santa Barbara (21-25, 3-8 Big West) on Saturday afternoon. It was the fifth straight win by the Gauchos in the series over a top-10 ranked LBSU team, dating back to last year's sweep over the then-No. 4-ranked Dirtbags at Blair Field. The Beach had won 10-straight series this season, prior to this weekend's games. Justin Segal, who was very successful against The Beach on Friday, gave up back-to-back homers to Sean Boatright and Brandon Godfrey to let LBSU close to within 7-6. But Alex McRobbie would get the next three 49ers in the eighth, before giving up a walk and a two-out base hit to Troy Tulowitzki to make it interesting in the final frame. McRobbie though would get Boatright to flyout to deep center to end the contest and to pick up his 11th save. LBSU rally began an inning before, as three runs in the eighth closed the deficit. It all began with a leadoff Tulowitzki double and after going hitless in his first three at-bats, a two-run homer by Boatright to extend his hit streak to 25 games. Godfrey followed with a shot down the rightfield line to make it 7-6. UCSB though used its own long-range strategy to get to LBSU starter Marco Estrada (7-1), who gave up his first three homers of the season. Estrada went five innings and gave up a season-high seven runs on five hits. Michael Matrin (5-5) countered with six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits. The Gauchos for the second-straight day took an early lead, as Chris Malec, making his first start since being diagnosed with cancer, hit a grand slam in the first to give UCSB a 4-0 lead. David Figoni's solo homer to leadoff off the third made it 5-1, while a two-run homer by Matt Wilkerson, his second of the series, put UCSB up 7-3. LBSU scratched back with a Chris Jones solo homer in the second, and a sacrifice fly by Danny Mocny in the fourth and a solo homer by Chuck Sindlinger in the fifth to make it 5-3. The series finale will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
