Post-Season Play Ends for the 49ers
FRESNO, CA -- A Haley Woods two-out, two-strike, two-run double to center field in the top of the seventh inning lifted the No. 2 National Seed, California Golden Bears, to a 4-3 win over No. 24-ranked Long Beach State at the Bulldog Diamond on Friday night. The loss eliminated the 49ers from post-season play. Long Beach State concluded its season at 39-16. Long Beach State senior Lauren Johnson (First-Team All-Big West) connected for her 14th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. The 14th home run marked a single-season school record. Her run scored also gave her 42 for the season -- another single-season record. Johnson leaves Long Beach State as the career record holder in runs scored and home runs. Lacy Tyler went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kourtnee Gervasi went 1-for-3 with an RBI. California (47-12) jumped on the board first with a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a Julie Meyer single to left field scored Emily Friedman. Long Beach State quickly responded to knot the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when Gervasi notched a double down the right field line, coupled with an error by shortstop Chelsea Spencer, that would eventually score Jonae Perez. The Golden Bears came right back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning after a Jessica Parmanian single to the outfield plated Lindsay James. LBSU tied the score in the bottom of the third when Tyler's double to right-center field scored Oli Keohohou. The Beach took a 3-2 lead in the fourth courtesy of Johnson's solo home run. Down to its final out, California scored two runs in the top of the seventh and held off the 49ers in the bottom half of the inning to claim the 4-3 win. Senior Meredith Cervenka suffered the loss (23-9). The 2005 1st Team All-West Region selection allowed four runs (one earned) with five strikeouts. Her 23 wins were the most in her career and the third best single-season mark. She leaves Long Beach State as the all-time record holder in career wins and strikeouts. Long Beach State has won 30 or more games 18 times since 1986. The 49ers won 22 of 24 games heading into post-season play and won their second consecutive Big West Conference title as well. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
