Fresno State Tops LBSU, 4-0
FRESNO, CA -- The No. 24-ranked Long Beach State softball team fell to host and No. 15-ranked Fresno State, 4-0, in the opening game of the 2005 NCAA Softball Regionals at the Bulldog Diamond on Thursday evening. Long Beach State fell to 39-15 and will face the loser of the Thursday night's Cal/BYU game on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Jamie Southern pitched a three-hitter for Fresno State to go along with 11 strikeouts to improve to 27-3 on the season, while Kristin Sylvester went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Marcel Torres (15-7) suffered the loss for the 49ers, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. Jennifer Martinez worked an inning in the sixth. Torres, Kourtnee Gervasi, and Tiffanie Wedell had all three hits for The Beach. Fresno State generated its first run in the first inning after a Nichole Willis triple scored Southern from second base. A Sylvester double to left center field in the third inning plated both Willis and Christina Clark, and a Rachael Donaldson single down the right field line drove in Sylvester. "At this time of the year, it's all about doing the little things, said head coach Pete Manarino. "We had a golden opportunity in the first inning (LBSU had baserunners on second and third base), we just couldn't get it done."
