RIVERSIDE, CA -- The No. 24-ranked Long Beach State softball team defeated UC Riverside 5-3 (eight innings) and 3-2 in a pair of Big West Conference games at Harrison Field on Friday. Long Beach State is 38-14, 18-2 Big West and has won 21 of its last 23 games. In fact LBSU has won 18 straight conference series since April 26, 2003. Senior Lauren Johnson tied a single-season school record with her 13th home run of the year in game two.
Game one remained scoreless thru four innings, before UCR scored two runs off starting pitcher Meredith Cervenka in the bottom of the fifth inning. Long Beach State responded in the sixth inning when a Jonae Perez sacrifice fly to right field scored Jessica Beaver from third base, and trimmed the Highlanders lead to 2-1.
UC Riverside regained the two run advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jennifer Thompson connected for a single to score Mandi Salcido for the 3-1 lead.
Long Beach State started its rally in the seventh inning when Kourtnee Gervasi hit a double down the left field line with one out. After Brooke LeSage popped up to the second baseman for the second out, Gervasi advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Lauren Johnson was then intentionally walked and Jessica Beaver was issued a walk to load the bases. Oli Keohohou followed with a single to left field to plate Gervasi. Marcel Torres then reached base on an error by the third base man, which allowed Johnson to score and tie the game at 3-3.
The 49ers took the lead in the eighth inning when a Melanie McCauley double to center field scored Lacy Tyler and a Melissa Backstrom single scored McCauley for the 5-3 lead.
Despite allowing a season-high 11 hits, Cervenka collected her Big West leading 23rd win in the circle.
Game two started with a Johnson leadoff home run in the first inning and a 1-0 Long Beach State lead.
UC Riverside managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning, before LBSU took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the sixth inning.
Marcel Torres picked up her 15th victory in the circle, allowing two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Long Beach State concludes its regular season at UCR (15-42, 3-16) tomorrow at noon.
