Cervenka, 49ers Slam Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Thanks to a one-hit shutout from senior pitcher Meredith Cervenka, and home runs from senior Lauren Johnson and freshman Jonae Perez, the Long Beach State softball team blanked Cal Poly, 6-0 in a Big West Conference game on Sunday afternoon. The first place 49ers improved to 33-14, 13-2 Big West, while Cal Poly fell to 32-16, 12-6 Big West. Cervenka (20-8) pitched a complete game and earned her 11th shutout of the season. Her 11 shutouts have given her 35 for her career, which moved her past Kristi Fox for third place all-time in career shutouts at The Beach. Cervenka also reached 20 wins for the third time in her four-year career. Johnson notched her 11th home run of the season, second most in a single-season in program history (Jessica Smith, 13 in 2000). Perez connected for her first career home run at LBSU with a three-run blast in the fifth inning. Long Beach State jumped on the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Johnson hit the two-out solo home run. LBSU added another run in the fourth inning after a Melanie McCauley RBI single up the middle of the infield scored Oli Keohohou. Long Beach State broke the game open in the fifth inning when Perez notched the three-run home run, plating both Marcel Torres and Keohohou. A Chelsey Stofler single with two outs in the seventh inning broke up Cervenka's bid for a no-hitter. The 49ers return to action when they host UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series at the 49er Softball Complex, May 7-8. Notes:
