LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 11-ranked Long Beach State (32-14) allowed just one in its series, as the Dirtbags swept visiting UC Davis (21-21) with a 9-1 win on Sunday afternoon. For the series, The Beach pounded out 22 runs on 39 hits, while the pitching staff allowed just 13 hits.

Jared Hughes (7-2) won his sixth in a row with six and one-third innings of one run, four-hit baseball, as he came one strikeout short of his career high with nine punchouts. At one point he retired 10 in a row.

Evan Longoria had three hits and three runs for the Dirtbags as part of a 17-hit attack, while Danny Mocny went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Chuck Sindlinger finished off a strong series with a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs, while Chris Jones went 2-for-4.

The Dirtbags went up 3-1 in the first inning, after UC Davis broke the 49ers' scoreless inning streak at 20 straight innings dating back to last Sunday. It was the Aggies first run of the series thanks to a sacrifice fly by Daniel Descalso. Three-straight two-out hits quickly erased the Aggie lead as RBI singles by Boatright and Longoria made it 2-1. An RBI double by Chris Jones followed to make it 3-1.

The Beach tacked on four runs in the fourth inning off back-to-back two-run singles from Sindlinger and Mocny to lead 7-1. Eddie Gamboa did not get out of the inning, giving up seven runs on seven hits over three and one-third innings.

LBSU then added two more in the fifth thanks to run-scoring singles from Scott Bradley and Mocny again to make it 9-1, as UC Davis reliever Peter Soskin after giving up two runs, pitched the final three innings of scoreless relief.

The 49ers return to conferece play next weekend when they travel to UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series beginning on Friday.
