Hughes Fires Off Another Solid Outing

LONG BEACH, CA-- Jared Hughes (3-2) fired off his second-straight strong outing as No. 20-ranked Long Beach State (21-10, 3-0 Big West) swept the opening weekend of Big West play with a 4-1 win over visiting UC Riverside (12-15, 0-3 Big West).

Hughes went 7.0 strong innings, giving up one run on three hits, striking out seven and walking just one. Hughes at one point retired the first seven and then 13 more through six innings, as the sophomore pitched to just two over the minimum over the first six. The gap in Highlander outs was the result of back-to-back doubles from Andrew Garcia and Anthony Claggett who tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning. Hughes was coming off a complete game win over CS Fullerton last weekend.

Hughes would finish off with 7.0 innings of one-run, three-hit baseball, which saw the righthander strike out seven and walk just one. Neil Jamison pitched the final two shutout innings for his eighth save.

The Dirtbags got on the board in the second inning with back-to-back leadoff singles by Sean Boatright and Chris Jones, before a one-out groundball to second by Zach Barger made it 1-0.

LBSU broke up a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a one-out, two-run double from Steve Velazco to lead 3-1. Bills had hit Danny Mocny to leadoff the inning before an error from first baseman Nick Salotti put two runners on with no outs.

Mocny made it 4-1 in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Taylor Bills (2-5) lasted 5.1 innings for UCR, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits.

The Dirtbags close out their seven-game homestand with UCLA on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. LBSU will continue with Big West play next weekend at UC Irvine.
