LONG BEACH, CA-- Chris Jones' bases loaded grounder off the tip of Haley Winters' glove allowed Brandon Godfrey to come plateward and give the No. 20-ranked Long Beah State Dirtbags (20-10, 2-0 Big West) its first conference series of the year, with a 1-0 win over visiting UC Riverside (12-14, 0-2 Big West).

Winter (4-4), who went the distance with 8.1 innings, cruised through the first six innings, pitching to just one over the minimum, while giving up just one hit. But LBSU would tire out the Highlander ace, as single hits in the seventh and eighth would give Winter 108 pitches entering the ninth inning. Winter than gave up a leadoff single to Godfrey, followed by a double to right center by Troy Tulowitzki.

After an intentional walk to Sean Boatright, who had gotten two of the team's five hits, Jones hit to second baseman Jaime Pedroza, who tried unsuccessfully to throw home after it was tipped by Winter.

The team's fifth win in its last at-bat made a winner out of Brian Anderson (3-0), who pitched the final 2.0 shutout innings. Marco Estrada left with his second-straight no-decision, pitching 7.0 shuout innings, allowing just six hits. Estrada struck out eight and walked none on 102 pitches.

The series finale will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Blair Field.
