LONG BEACH, CA-- The No. 5-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team (20-9, 13-8 MPSF) easily defeated the Pacific Tigers (7-20, 5-16 MPSF) on Friday night for their third consecutive win, 30-19, 30-17, 30-25.
Robert Tarr led the 49ers with 17 kills tallying an impressive .714 hitting percentage. Teddy Liles chipped in eight kills, hit .636 (8-1-11) and had 10 blocks. Norm Hutton was the only other 49er in double digits in kills collecting 10. Tyler Hildebrand finished with 39 assists on the evening, as the 49ers hit .493 as a team. Long Beach also recorded nine service aces (three each by Hutton and Tarr) and out-blocked the Tigers 13.5 to 8.5.
The Tigers were held to a .182 hitting percentage, as Pekka Seppanen led with nine kills and Brian Adamson had eight.
The 49ers started off slow in game one, but gained momentum after an ace by Tarr gave them a 15-12 lead. They never looked back from there as they took a 25-16 lead after a block assist by Duncan Budinger and Hildebrand. A kill by Paul Lotman gave Long Beach State the victory, 30-19. The 49ers hit .476 in the game while the Tigers hit .000 (8-8-22).
The Beach came out strong in game two, taking a 10-point lead, 17-7, after consecutive aces by Lotman. They held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game and hit .542 in the set. Hutton had six kills and two aces in game two.
The Tigers put up a fight in game three, but Long Beach pulled away after a kill by Tarr gave them a 28-23 lead. LBSU finished the sweep hitting .462 in the final game. Pacific hurt itself with eight service errors in the game.
Long Beach State returns to action tomorrow night at the Walter Pyramid to take on Stanford at 7:30 p.m. as part of Senior Night The 49er seniors are Hildebrand, Budinger and Tarr. |
