Hughes Pitches a Two-Hit Shutout
IRVINE, CA-- Jared Hughes (4-2) simply dominated host UC Irvine (15-15, 2-4 Big West), letting just two balls get out of the infield all day as the the No. 13-ranked Dirtbags (24-10, 5-1 Big West) won a 10-0 series clinching victory on Sunday afternoon. The two-hit shutout kept The Beach in a first place tie in the Big West standings (with CS Fullerton, Cal Poly) and was the team's ninth series win of the season. The sophomore righthander gave up just one infield single through eight innings, before a high chopping single in the ninth contributed to the other hit. Hughes struck out a career-best 10, including the side looking in the seventh. Hughes would pitch to just four over the minimum, and rack up eight of his strikeouts over his final five innings. Hughes has now allowed just two runs over his last three starts and 25 innings, which has led to three-straight victories. Sean Boatright went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including his first homerun of the season, while Brandon Godfrey added a four-hit afternoon as The Beach pounded out 16 hits. Tito Cruz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs as well. Boatright got on the board in the fourth with a solo homer to left field and just missed another one in the sixth inning, settling for a two-run double off the centerfield wall to give LBSU a 3-0 advantage. Boatright extended his hit streak to 12 games in the process. The Beach scored five runs in the sixth inning to lead 6-0, as a one-out RBI double by Tito Cruz followed Boatright's heroics to extend the Dirtbags lead to 4-0. Steve Velazco's two-out double down the leftfield line made it 6-0. Irvine starter Ryan Schroer (3-4) pitched into the sixth, going 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. A two-out RBI double from Jaime Huizar in the eighth inning extended the lead to 7-0. The scoring continue in the ninth inning with three more runs, as an RBI double from Brandon Godrey, the team's seventh of the day, made it 8-0, before an infield single by Tom Wolf put nine on the board. LBSU hit double digits with an infield single from Cruz. The Dirtbags travel to Pepperdine on Tuesday for a contest at 3 p.m., before hosting CS Northridge in a three-game series starting next Friday at Blair Field. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
