MALIBU, CA-- No. 29-ranked Pepperdine (23-10) scored two unearned runs in the fouth inning and held on for a 4-3 win over visiting No. 14-ranked Long Beach State (24-12) on Tuesday afternoon.

Chad Tracy drove in the go-ahead runs in the fourth with a two-run, two-out single off of Donnie Hume (1-1) in the fourth, after a Hume error following a misfielded bunt attempt eventually allowed the runs to score.

Hume had walked the leadoff hitter and following the error, loaded the bases with one out with another walk. Hume thought he was through trouble, with a popup to first to get the second out, but Tracy came through with what would become the game-winning hit.

Andrew Liebel kept Pepperdine scoreless with 3.0 shutout innings of relief, retiring the first nine batters he faced as The Beach closed to within 4-3 in the seventh inning and had the go-ahead run in the plate in the ninth against closer Steve Kleen.

LBSU had its chances, as after Troy Tulowitzki drove in one of his two runs on the day with an RBI single in the seventh to close to within 4-3, a line-drive double play ended the threat in the seventh. In the ninth, a two-out hit by pitch of Chris Jones brought Tulowitzki back to the plate, only to watch Kleen work a popup to end the game and get his eighth save.

The Beach took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Danny Mocny came around to score after a leadoff single thanks to a steal and two groundouts, one by Tulowitzki, before Brandon Godfrey made it 2-0 with a two-out double. Pepperdine would tie it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning with two of starter Cody Evans, who would pitch the first two and give up three hits.

The Dirtbags return to Blair Field this Friday to host a three-game Big West Conference series with CS Northridge starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's Mike Weathers Show live from Cirivello's Restaurant and broadcast live starting at 6 p.m. on KWRM-1370 AM and the internet will feature today's starter Cody Evans and freshman outfielder Zach Barger.
