Ramos Solid Again, Wins His Fifth-Straight
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State lefthander Cesar Ramos (8-3) won his fifth in a row and the No. 14-ranked Dirtbags (25-12, 6-1 Big West) won their series opener, defeating visiting CS Northirdge (12-17-1, 0-7 Big West) 7-2 on Friday evening. Ramos tallied another strong outing, going 7.1 innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits, striking out seven and walking none. Ramos left in the eighth with a 4-2 lead, as Brian Anderson gave up two hits in the inning, before getting Erik Hagstrom to strikeout. LBSU then tacked on three runs in the bottom of the inning to put the contest away. Evan Longoria made it 3-1 in the fourth with a one-out homer to left center, his second of the season, before an RBI double from Sean Boatright made it 4-1. It was Boatright's second RBI of the day following a fielder's choice in the third, as he extended his hit streak to 14 games. Following 2.1 scoreless innings of relief by Matt Gaylord, LBSU went to work on reliever Ivan Lopez to score three runs in the eighth to lead 7-2. Scott Bradley gave the Dirtbags some breathing room with a one-out single to right to make it 5-2, before a Chuck Sindlinger sacrifice fly made it 6-2. Both runs came after reliever Lopez walked a batter. Jaime Huizar then scored Bradley, after a steal, with an RBI single to make it 7-2. Kyle Jean lasted just 4.2 innings for the Matadors, giving up four runs on seven hits. His replacement, Matt Gaylord pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to keep CSUN in the ballgame. The Beach took full advantage of their leadoff hitter getting home, as their first two runs came after the leadoff batter reached base. Danny Mocny led off the Dirtbag scoring in the first inning with a seeing-eye triple over the head of centefielder Johnny Coit, before being driven in with a one-out RBI double from Troy Tulowitzki to lead 1-0. After CSUN tied it with one of their two unearned runs in the top of the third, The Beach re-took the lead at 2-1 after Sindlinger led off the inning with a single. A fielding error by rightfielder Steve Velazco in the seventh and a failed throw on a fielder's choice over the head of catcher Chris Jones by third baseman Tito Cruz led to CSUN's two unearned runs. LBSU was without the services of first baseman Brandon Godfrey, who was not in the lineup for a violation of team rules. His replacement, Bradley, came through with a key RBI single in the eighth inning. The Dirtbags continue the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
