Longoria and Bullpen Shutdown LMU
LONG BEACH, CA-- Evan Longoria equaled Loyola Marymount's (4-9) hit total for the night with five hits as No. 26-ranked Long Beach State (12-7) scored six unanswered runs and held on for a 6-4 win over visiting LMU. Longoria became the first Dirtbag with five hits since Brad Davis in February, 2004. Neil Jamison picked up his sixth save with a scoreless ninth as the 49er bullpen following a double play ball in the sixth inning retired the final 11 in a row. Chuck Sindlinger added a 4-for-4 night as well. Donnie Hume (1-0), in his first collegiate start, hurled 4.0 pre-determined shutout innings to start for The Beach, giving up just two hits and striking out three on 60 pitches. Both teams would combine to use 12 pitchers. The Dirtbags tallied three doubles in the third inning to take an early 3-0 lead off of LMU starter Daniel Macias (0-1). After a leadoff double by Longoria started the inning, an RBI single from Brandon Godfrey following a sacrifice made 1-0. A double by Sean Boatright followed by a double by Chris Jones quickly made it 3-0. LBSU added a run in the second off an RBI single from Chuck Sindlinger to make it 4-0. Macias lasted just 2.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits. LBSU tagged on two more runs in the fifth thanks to Sindlinger's second RBI single of the night, and an RBI groundout to lead 6-0. Erik Reyes would allow those two runs and then retire the next six, before tiring in the sixth, allowing just two runs over the next 3.1 innings of relief for LMU. LMU got back in the ballgame with four unanswered runs in the middle innings to close to within 6-4. The Lions scored three runs (two earned) off of reliever Cody Evans in the fifth, before a double play ball in the sixth against reliever Andrew Liebel made it 6-4. Wednesday's Mike Weathers Show, live from Cirivello's at 4115 Viking Way in Long Beach starting at 6:30 p.m., will feature ace setup man Brian Anderson. The Dirtbags continue their four-game homestand this weekend when lefthander Cesar Ramos, at 3-2, gets the call in the series opener on Friday against Houston at 6:30 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
