Dirtbag Rally Comes Up Short in the Ninth
Farrington Outduels Ramos in 2-1 Win

LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 26-ranked Long Beach State's (12-6) ninth inning rally came up a run short as Houston (7-9) won the series opener 2-1 at Blair Field on Friday night. LBSU was able to chase Houston starter Matt Farrington (3-0) in the ninth, after a leadoff single from Chuck Singlinger, but closer Justin Vaclavik was able to pick up his fourth save of the year after The Beach cut the lead to on.

Farrington outdueled LBSU lefthander Cesar Ramos (3-3) with 8.0 strong innings of one-run, four-hit baseball, as Ramos counterd with just two runs and six hits over 7.2 innings. Four of Houston's hits were infield singles.

LBSU mounted the rally with singles by Sindlinger and Brandon Godfrey, as a fielder's choice would plate Sindlinger and cut the Houston lead to 2-1. Sindlinger had reached third on a flyout by Sean Boatright, who was playing his first game in centerfield since the season opener. But LBSU could not push that final run across as Tom Wolf grounded out to end the contest.

Jake Stewart led off the fourth inning with his second infield hit of the night, as a sacrifice followed by another infield single, but a runner on third with one out. Stewart then scored ahead of the throw by first baseman Brandon Godfrey on a fielder's choice off the bat of Dustin Kingsbury to lead 1-0.

Houston tacked on another run in the eighth to lead 2-0 as Mark McGonigle scored from second on an RBI single to right from Kevin Roberts.

Brian Anderson ran is scoreless innings streak dating back to last year to 20.2 consecutive scoreless innings with 1.2 innings of shutout relief. His career-best is 23.0 scoreless innings set in 2002 and 2003.

The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
