WACO, TX-- First team pre-season All-American Mark McCormick struck out a season-high eight strikeouts as No. 14-ranked Baylor (8-6) salvaged the final game of the three-game series with a 7-1 win over visiting No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (11-7). The loss snaps a six-game win streak for The Beach.

McCormack gave up just one run on four hits over 6.1 innings, while his counterpart, Jared Hughes could not get out of the fifth inning. Hughes (1-1) lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits to lose his first game as a 49er. Baylor scored three times in the fifth to force Hughes from the ballgame and lead 5-0.

Brandon Godfrey had two hits and an RBI single in the losing cause.

Reid Brees' home run to left field in the fourth made it 2-0 after Baylor took a 1-0 in the first off a two-out infield single off of Hughes ankle, the first lead of the weekend for the Bears. In the fifth, A two-run double by Zach Dillon followed by an RBI double by Brees made it 5-0.

The homer by Brees in the fourth was just the second longball given up by the 49er pitching staff this season.

Baylor would tag on two runs in the seventh inning off of Brett Andrade to lead 7-1.

The Dirtbags return home for a four-game homestand starting next Tuesday with Loyola Marymount and the University of Houston next weekend.
