Ramos Leads Beach to Series Opening Win
WACO, TX-- Cesar Ramos (3-2) hurled 7.0 strong innings to lead No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (10-6) to its fifth-straight win with a 4-2 win over host No. 14-ranked Baylor (7-5). Ramos, who picked up his first win since February 4, retired the last eight batters he faced, giving up two unearned runs on seven hits, and just one hit after the third inning. Ramos struck out six and walked none. Brian Anderson pitched a scoreless eighth, while Neil Jamison picked up his fourth save. The 49ers pitching staff retired the final 14 in a row. The Dirtbags got to Trey Taylor (2-2) in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits to lead 3-0. A one-out walk to Chris Jones followed by a single from Evan Longoria started the rally. An RBI single down the rightfield line by Sean Boatright made it 1-0, before Jordan Struble's infield single made it 2-0. A two-out double from Cruz made it 3-0, scoring Boatright. Three errors in the bottom of the third would cut the lead to 3-2. A fielding error by leftfielder Danny Mocny opened the inning off a single to left, while a sacrifice fly two batters later gave Baylor its first run. A fielding error by second baseman Chuck Sindlinger allowed the second run to score and make it 3-2. Another fielding error, this time by first baseman Scott Bradley continued the inning, but a diving catch by Steve Velazco in center, finally ended the inning. A sacrifice fly by Longoria in the fourth inning gave LBSU a two-run cushion at 4-2. Mocny extended his hit steak to eight games with a one-out single and eventually scored on Longoria's flyout. Taylor would last 5.0-plus innings for Baylor, giving up four runs on eight hits. Ryan LaMotta pitched the next 3.0 innings, giving up no runs. Ramos worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the second, getting a fielder's choice groundout to home plate followed by a flyball to center to end the threat. Mocny (left shoulder) and Sean Boatright (hamstring) were both in the starting lineup to open the series, as Boatright started his third-straight game at designated hitter, while Mocny had been out the previous two weeks with that shoulder injury. Mocny started in left field and Boatright was at designated hitter. The next two games of the series will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. PST. The Dirtbags return home Tuesday against Loyola Marymount. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
