LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State lefthander Cesar Ramos (5-3) tossed a complete game two-hitter as No. 29-ranked Long Beach State (17-9) won the opener of college baseball's best rivalry, defeating No. 1-ranked CS Fullerton (16-5) 3-2 on Thursday evening.

For Ramos, the reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week, he remained perfect against his teammates from the U.S. National Team, outdueling Ricky Romero (5-2) this week, after a four-hit shutout of Mike Pelfrey and Wichita State last weekend.

On the night Ramos struck out eight and walked two, retiring 11 in a row in the middle innings and the final eight Titans of the ballgame. Brandon Godfrey's diving stop of a grounder to the right of first base ended the game, as Godfrey tossed the game ball to the ace lefthander to end it.

Back-to-back RBI singles from Evan Longoria and Chris Jones gave the Dirtbags a 3-2 lead in the seventh. Romero led off the inning with a leadoff walk, and followed with a hit by pitch, as the singles erased a 2-1 lead by Fullerton.

CSF took the lead in the sixth after Ramos had retired 11 in a row. A leadoff walk to John Curtis proved costly as Curtis would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Sergio Pedroza to give the vistor's a 2-1 advantage. LBSU had tied it at 1-1 in the third.

It didn't take Troy Tulowitki long to return from six weeks on the shelf with a hand injury (hamate bone) as the junior All-American laced a two-out double to tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning. This was the first game with the Dirtbags' middle of the order; Tulowitzki, third baseman Danny Mocny and Sean Boatright, since February 5. Mocny had try playing with his injured left shoulder just once since February 20.

Romero took the loss giving up three runs on eight hits over 7.2 innings.

College Baseball's best rivaly continues on Friday and Saturday at Blair Field with both games starting at 6:30 p.m.
