Dirtbags Take Series with Wichita State
WICHITA, KS-- No. 28-ranked Long Beach State (16-8) pounded out 13 hits as Marco Estrada (5-0) remained perfect on the season with a 5-2 win over host No. 14-ranked Wichita State (18-5). It was the Dirtbags third series win over a top-15 opponent. The Dirtbags, winners of their 11 of their last 13, have hit double digit hits in three of their last four contests, as Brandon Godfrey, Steve Velazco, Chris Jones and Cole Jacobsen each had two hits a piece. Estrada fired off 7.0 strong innings, giving up just one run on six hits, striking out seven, while walking three. After giving up his only run in the fifth, he retired the final seven Shockers he faced. Steve Hammond would come on in the eighth and give up a bunt single to his only batter,Damon Sublett, before a two-out single by WSU's Phil Napolitan off of Brian Anderson cut the lead to 3-2. LBSU would then tack on two in the ninth. The Dirtbags went up 2-0 after four innings thanks to an RBI single from Zach Barger in the second and a seeing-eye double past third by Velazco in the fourth. Velazco also came up big in the field making a spectacular catch in right-centerfield to end the fourth inning with the Dirtbags up 2-0. With a runner on third and two outs, Velazco ended the inning with a diving catch towards the rightfield wall. LBSU would then tack on a run in the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Sindlinger to lead 3-0. Estrada was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning, striking out Quin Vinze to end the threat and keep it at 3-1. Wichita State scored their first run of the series earlier in the inning off an RBI single from Nick McCoola. Back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Sindlinger and Jones in the ninth gave LBSU some breathing room at 5-2 Jereme Foster (2-1) gave up three runs on 10 hits over 8.0 innings to take the loss for Wichita State, striking out seven and walking one.
