Wichita Salvages Final Game 7-0
WICHITA, KS-- No. 14-ranked Wichita State (19-5) was able to salvage the final game of the series with No. 28-ranked Long Beach State (16-9), defeating the Dirtbags 7-0 on Sunday afternoon. Travis Banwart (2-0) scattered eight hits over six-plus shutout innings, striking out three and walking one. The Dirtbags had limited the Shockers to just two runs over the first two games of the series, both wins. The Beach have now won three road series over top-15 opponents this season, winning 11 of their last 14 games. The loss snaps a four-game win streak for LBSU. LBSU starter Jared Hughes (1-2) continued his mid-year slump, giving up four runs over 3.0 innings, walking three and hitting two others. Hughes also had five strikeouts. Hughes has now given up 13 runs over his last three starts. The pitching staff today gave up eight walks on the day to go along with the Shockers' 11 hits. Hughes had his problems in the third inning, as Wichita State batted around and went up 4-0 off a three-run homer from Tad Reida. Hughes walked two and hit another in the inning. Hughes began the day strong, retiring the first five Shockers, before giving up a run in the second off a single by Joe Muich. The greatest college baseball rivalry in the country begins next Thursday at Blair Field, running through Saturday, featuring CS Fullerton and Long Beach State. All games are at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's Mike Weathers Show will feature Saturday starter Marco Estrada and catcher Tito Cruz at 6:30 p.m. live from Cirivello's Restraunt at 4115 Viking Street in Long Beach. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
