Ramos Outduels Pelfrey in 1-0 Win
WICHITA, KS-- Long Beach State lefthander Cesar Ramos (4-3) outdueled fellow All-American and National Teammate Mike Pelfrey (3-2) with a four-hit shutout as the No. 28-ranked Dirtbags (15-8) defeated host No. 14-ranked Wichita State 1-0 in the opener of the three-game series. Ramos, who masterfully weaved out of trouble after an early 1-0 lead, got 11 groundball ball outs to go along with his two strikeouts as his defense made plays when they needed to, despite three errors in the field. Ramos has allowed two or less runs in each of his last five starts as it was his first shutout since March 13, 2004 when he pitched a two-hitter at Petco Park over San Diego State. Chuck Sindlinger had two of the Dirtbags three hits. The Dirtbags went up 1-0 in the first after two errors by the Shockers. An two-base error by third baseman Brandon Hall put Evan Longoria on second, before Longoria moved to third on a groundout. Then after a strikeout, an error by shortstop Nick McCoola scored Longoria to give LBSU a one-run lead. Pelfrey countered with 11 strikeouts and no walks, giving up just three hits in a complete game loss. The Dirtbags continue their series in the Jayhawk State with games on Saturday at 12 p.m. PST and on Sunday at 11 a.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
