49ers Swim Past Pacific, 11-5 Canetti Leads Way With 3 Goals

LONG BEACH, CA-- Marina Canetti scored three goals as the No. 3-ranked Long Beach State women's water polo team raced to an 11-5 win over Pacific on Friday afternoon at the Campus Pool. The 49ers improved to 13-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) with the win. Pacific falls to 9-9 and 1-3 in league action.
The 49ers jumped on the Tigers early scoring the first five goals of the game. Tara Campbell got Long Beach on the board first with a goal at 6:20, followed by a tally at 4:51 by Alison Braden. Junior Cassie Azevedo then scored back-to-back goals (4:03, 2:15) to give the 49ers a 4-0 lead. Canetti closed out the scoring spree at 0:50 with her first goal of the day.
Pacific got on the board with ten seconds left in the first quarter on a goal by Virginia McConnell. Sarah Meerdink led Pacific with two goals.
Azevedo, Braden and Drue Wawrzynski all tallied two goals for the 49ers. Long Beach goalie Bri Hawkins had a strong outing recording 13 goalie saves.
The 49ers will be in action on Saturday, March 19 when they host No. 6-ranked California at 12 pm at the Campus Pool.
