Anderson Runs Scoreless Streak to 23.1 Innings in Win

LONG BEACH, CA-- Coles Jacobsen's (Fresno) skewer of a base hit past a diving leftfielder Kori Williams gave the No. 26-ranked Long Beach State Dirtbags (14-8) a come-from-behind, 5-4 victory over visiting Houston (7-11) on Sunday afternoon. The win clinched the series for The Beach, who have won their three straight series.

Houston's Brad Lincoln (1-3), who had tossed 85 pitches through eight innings, including just 22 over the first nine batters of the game, got the first two outs in the ninth of a 4-3 game, before Tom Wolf singled to center. Zach Barger with his third hit of the afternoon, a single to put runners on the corners. Jacobsen followed with a low line drive to leftfield which got by Williams and allowed two runs to score and give The Beach its fourth win it its final at-bat of the season.

It also made a winner out of ace reliever Brian Anderson (2-0), who ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 23.1 innings by retiring the final nine Cougars he faced. Lincoln finished with 8.2 innings pitched, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits.

The streak though nearly came to an end in the seventh, but after leadoff hitter Jake Stewart singled and moved to third on a steal and throwing error, Anderson got a popup, strikeout and fly out to keep the score at 4-3. Anderson then proceeded to retire the next six to keep The Beach close.

LBSU took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning with three runs in the inning. An RBI double from Jamie Huizar cut the lead to one, before Chris Jones followed with a two-run single up the middle to give The Beach the lead.

Jared Hughes tired in the sixth inning, loading the bases in the innning, before Donnie Hume gave up a two-run double to Mark McGonigle to re-take the lead for Houston at 4-3. Hughest gave up four runs on five hits over 5.2 innings, walking four and striking out three.

The Dirtbags travel to Wichita State next weekend for a three-game series beginning on 5 p.m. on Friday, live on KWRM-1370 AM.
