LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (9-6) added an insurance run in the eighth inning and it paid off as The Beach edged visiting Pepperdine (6-7) 4-3 on Tuesday evening. It was the 49ers fourth-straight win.

Brian Anderson, the fifth pitcher of the night, tossed 1.2 shutout innings to keep it at 3-2, before yielding to Neil Jamison in the ninth. Jamison, who got his third save, got Adrian Ortiz to lead off the ninth with a pop up to third that was dropped by third baseman Cole Jacobsen. Ortiz would eventually single and score on a two-out RBI single from Steve Kleen to bring the score to 4-3 and put runners on the corners. Jamison though would strike out Danny Worth to end the game.

LBSU went up 4-2 in the eighth inning off two singles and a fielder's choice groundout from Tom Wolf to give the 49ers that extra run for the ninth.

The Beach scored two unearned runs in the second inning to lead 2-0. A fielding error by shortstop Danny Worth allowed the inning to continue as Steve Velazco followed with a walk to put two on, with two out. Cole Jacobsen then doubled down the rightfield line to make it 1-1. A wild pitch by Doug Konoske scored Velazco and made it 2-0.

LBSU tagged on a run in the fifth after the Waves scored a run in the top of the inning, with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Godrey. Konoske (0-1), in his collegiate debut, went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits for Pepperdine.

LBSU starter Cody Evans went the first 4.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits, off three walks, and was lifted in the fifth for Brett Andrade, who got an RBI groundout for Pepperdine's first run, for one of his three outs. Matt Fitts gave up a groundball out for a run in the sixth to cut the LBSU lead to 3-2.

Pepperdine Coach Steve Rodriguez was ejected in the middle of the seventh following a groundout to short to end the Waves half of the inning.

The Dirtbags take to the road for three this weekend, when they travel to No. 14-ranked Baylor.
